How long do I need? Planning how long to stay in Tasmania

Tasmania can be deceptively big and working out how much time you need to do all the things you want to do can be tricky, here are a few ideas for planning what to do and where to go on a short weekend away or a longer trip to Tasmania.

Short Break

If you only want to stay over a weekend or a three to four days then the best destinations for you are going to be Hobart and Launceston. Both Hobart and Launceston are easy to get to from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane via plane and offer plenty to do within an hours drive.

While our larger cities might offer the convenience of being easy to access don't expect to fit everything in just a few days and you may want to spend a bit more time if you have a long list of things to do. For example major attractions in Hobart like MONA (Museum of Old and New Art), the Tamar Valley, Cradle Mountain, Port Arthur and the Tasman Peninsula and Bruny Island can take a good day to explore properly the later not including travel time to get to. It's worth making a list and if necessary booking a head during peak periods to make sure you can do the things you want.

Using a major centre like Hobart or Launceston as a base for the weekend is a great idea especially if you don't want to hire a car. If you are happy to hire a car and spend a bit of time on the road then you can easily do short trips up the East Coast or to places like Cradle Mountain in a weekend and still have time to make your flights home.

Worst case scenario is you need more time or need to come back again to see and do everything you want.

It was a brilliant day at @tasmania #salamanca market yesterday. A little bit quiet but a wonderful array of local crafts and produce. #australia #autumn #bestjob #camblakephotography #discovertasmania #free #happy #instatassie #lovemyjob #lifesgood #photography #seeaustralia #tasmania

Longer Stay

If you want to get out and explore the different regional areas around Tasmania then you are going to need to spend a bit more than a weekend here. While Tasmania might seem small our roads can be a little deceptive and if you plan to stop often to check out different towns or go on a few walks then it's going to take more than just a weekend.

If you are planning to fly down and hire a car then we recommend staying for around a week especially if you want to do things like explore the full length of the East Coast or travel from Hobart over the high country to the West and North West Coasts. This will give you plenty of time to explore and get lost (happens more often than you would think) at your own pace. Taking seven or fourteen days for a trip to Tasmania opens up lots of possibilities for exploring different places and also different routes and there are plenty of different touring routes to follow.

If you come down on the Spirit of Tasmania then you can also bring your own vehicle which opens up options for things like four wheel driving or bringing a camper van or trailer.
